Sourced straight from environmentally-certified forests in Uganda, bark cloth is a unique textile that pre-dated woven materials. Hand-pounded bark cloth has been traditionally used by the Buganda people in the southern provinces of Uganda for centuries. Designers such as Christian Siriano, who sourced this material from Source4Style for his SS11 collection, have helped keep this tradition alive.

November 8, 2010

London calling: Source4Style brings together a fashionably conscious crowd to celebrate the launch of its new sustainable materials sourcing platform.

The skies were blue and the weather fair this past Thursday, November 4th for the Source4Style launch party in London. We seemed to some how steer clear of bookended madness – Wednesday being defined by those inconvenient Tube strikes and Friday marked by a frightfully soggy afternoon.

The private event was held for 100 hand-picked guests at the very posh pad of NEXT Model Management in Clerkenwell. Smooth white curved walls with a hi-def projection of the website and its material offerings, high ceilings, tunes by Kris Di Angelis, canapes by Jo Wood’s Mrs. Paisley Lashing’s catering, and mixed drinks like mangosteen cocktails were present compliments of Sweet & Chili and One Healthy Habit.

We also spoiled the guests with a 6 lb Source4Style goodie bag – filled with full-size Jo Wood Organic body lotion, Method Home eco-friendly laundry detergent, a copy of ABOVE Magazine, a copy of Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion & Beauty, Green & Black Chocolates, full bag of SUKI Teas, a pair of the MODO Eco sunglasses, and a gift certificate for swatches on Source4Style.

Members of ASOS, Monsoon, and Tesco came to join in the festivities alongside designers such as Ada Zanditon, Orsola de Castro, Ivana Basilotta and Minna Hepburn. Anna Orsini, the Director of The British Fashion Council stopped by to mingle. And Tyrone Wood, Polly Brown, Noah Huntley, and models Flavia Matata and Ella Kandyba came out in full support for the evening.

More pictures will be populated here in the coming days. Big thanks for Leena as well as Dale Cutts for the images. Top image compliments of Shawn Brackbill.

Apparel industry weighs in on the Eco Index

August 10, 2010

Members from the American Apparel & Footwear Association, Patagonia, VF Corporation, and others talk about the potential behind the Eco Index

As we have been reporting here over the last few weeks on Source4Style, there are new and exciting developments on an environmental assessment tool called the Eco Index, which is uniquely positioned to be the environmental assessment standard in the industry. Source4Style is one of 100 members of the Outdoor Industry’s Association’s (OIA) and European Outdoor Group’s Eco Working Group preparing the tool.

The Eco Index launched about two weeks ago in beta – “beta” being the operative word right now, since it is still in development but currently open for testing. We’ll be taking some products through the Eco Index in the next few weeks to give our own feedback and have already started incorporating the questions in our Source4Style Supplier’s Questionnaire, so that everyone sourcing on our site can help lead the industry towards a common language when it comes to environmental impact and efficiency.

We spoke with other Eco Working Group members in support of the Eco Index as to why this tool is different from the rest. View the 12-minute and 4-minute version below and stay tuned for New York-based workshops of the Eco Index coming up in the next couple months via OIA and Source4Style.com.
